Mesothelioma Treatment Options

Picking the correct treatment for malignant mesothelioma depends on several factors:

  • Location of the cancer
  • Stage of the cancer
  • Whether and how far the cancer has spread
  • Age of the patient and the patient's overall health

Generally, patients with better overall health can withstand more aggressive treatments.

There are three primary treatments used for malignant mesothelioma, as well as for other types of cancer: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Again, depending on the particular circumstances of the patient's condition, it may be wise to use one type of treatment or to use a combination of two or three options.

Some alternative therapies have recently been developed, but there is not enough research to show whether they are as effective at stopping cancer as surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.

New treatments are being researched all the time. Organizations such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society sponsor clinical trials to test how well new drugs and therapies battle cancer.

Mesothelioma treatment is a highly personal decision. Options should be discussed thoroughly with your physician. Each treatment has its pros and cons, and each carries side effects.
